University Medical Center Tracks Badge Scanners

A university medical center launched a program to replace physical desktops with a virtual workspace environment.

Selection Criteria

The medical center chose Stratusphere UX because it is purpose-built for assessments but also because the Liquidware team developed a special agent to track USBs and provide profiles for badge scanners.

Assessment

The organization used Stratusphere UX to create a baseline view of the physical desktop environment and then to calculate the sizing requirements for the resources needed for the target virtual environment and corresponding applications.

Optimization

A major challenge faced by the health organization was that it had difficulty gaining visibility into peripheral badge scanners. The organization had used multiple types and versions and had lost the database that tracked them. Each version interacted with applications differently. Liquidware developers created a unique CID key that gathered profile data for every badge reader within two hours and showed it had five versions of badge scanners in service. This agent is now a standard feature of Stratusphere UX.

ROI

The medical center also urgently needed to reduce operating costs. Stratusphere UX data showed that the center could use existing PCs to operate the virtual workspaces for about four more years. The center also decided to roll out ProfileUnity and FlexApp to reduce the manual tasks associated with managing workspaces, thus adding more savings.

Results

Users were initially resistant to the virtual workspaces but now have embraced them enthusiastically. Stratusphere UX has been deployed to provide ongoing logon monitoring, capacity planning and resource utilization reports. ProfileUnity and FlexApp offer granular control over user and application performance.

The medical center saved on costs by using a combination of thin clients and repurposed PCs which allowed them to stay within tight budget guidelines.
